What Are You

Perhaps one of my favorite questions, and one I have been answering most of my life, is “What are you”? Sometimes I hear that as “Who are you” but lately it has been asked about Not By Luck Ranch as “What is this place?” Is this an animal rescue? A sanctuary? Do you sell animals? Can we buy a goat? “What exactly are you?”

To be clear Not By Luck Ranch is not a rescue but we do work hard providing sanctuary to a variety of animals. At our core we are a little family who loves animals and nature in a big way. We spend most of our time caring for critters and planning ways to share them in an educational, fun and safe manner. I have learned the hard way that animal rescue is not what I am meant to do, but I still do what I can whenever possible. When we find the right animal we give it sanctuary here at Not By Luck Ranch.

I have a passion for the larger animals while my kids have a focus on the smaller and together we create our Ranch collection. Goats are of course the lead animal and most of the choices we make are based on the needs of the goats. But as life passes we evolve. I have never been one to label myself as anything other than Johnita. Rescuing animals certainly makes me happy but breeding toward a standard also makes me happy. As the years turn into decades I choose to focus where my happiness lays. Allowing myself to be whatever I want, and not being afraid of change, has worked well to create a joyful life. I find demanding and defining often leads to frustration and misery, while seeking and understanding tends to bring clarity and ease. So for now I am a lady who loves animals and walks goats in the forest…and sometimes I rescue animals. I imagine in the coming years my animal efforts will be solidly placed upon the Wild Horses and Burros living in holding pens, waiting for someone to rescue them.

And while we are not a rescue we may be one part goat ranch and one part farm animal sanctuary. The more visitors we have the more we can accomplish. Join us for a goat walk and know that your ticket purchase directly supports our sanctuary efforts, then decide for yourself what we are here, at Not By Luck Ranch.
